IMPACT100: How to Save a Life
Grant Year: 2019 | Focus Area: Health & Wellness | Grant Amount: $106,000 | Grant Status: Completed
Founded in 2003, the Health and Hope Clinic is a volunteer and donor driven free medical and dental clinic established by the Pensacola Bay Baptist Association to help meet the needs of the medically uninsured and under-served populations in the greater Pensacola and Escambia County area. Additionally, Health and Hope is supported by community individuals, groups and organizations. The Clinic incorporated in 2009, and tax-exempt status was granted by the Internal Revenue Service in July 2009. In January of 2014, the Clinic moved into a newly constructed building on East Olive Road. Currently, the Clinic has 200 volunteers, 900 active patients, and recorded 7,100 patient visits last year, providing over 1.8 million dollars in medical services. Numerous primary and specialty care providers offer services including dental, rheumatology, dermatology, orthopedic care, chiropractic care, comprehensive women's health services, minor office surgery, mental health counseling, diabetes management, and smoking cessation. Additional services to patients at no cost include full laboratory services, full pharmacy services including Patient Assistance Programs, and case/social work to assist patients in acquiring solutions to needs beyond the scope of the Clinic.
The IMPACT100: How to Save a Life project is a profound innovation for Northwest Florida, a first of its kind program, designed to reduce opioid overdose deaths by providing access to FDA-approved emergency medicine (Narcan) to individuals at risk of witnessing or experiencing an opioid overdose. The program will provide overdose recognition and response training for individuals who may witness or experience an overdose, and distribute free Narcan kits to individuals at risk of experiencing an opioid overdose, as well as to family and friends who may witness an overdose. IMPACT 100 funds will be used for: hiring a dedicated educator to develop, implement and function as the program administrator; staff training in best practices for a Free and Charitable Clinic and the administration of Narcan for opioid overdose; investment in infrastructure via new computers for program reporting, data storage, public presentations and the retrieval and publication of educational materials; and postage for return envelopes for used Naloxone Kits as one method to track usage. Funding will also support a new, innovative website and an ongoing marketing campaign designed to create awareness, recruit volunteers, and provide sustainability. The marketing campaign will include an integrated social media strategy, email marketing, and direct mail marketing.
The State of Florida, and particularly Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, are in a state of emergency associated with the opioid crisis. Findings suggest overdose education and lay administration of Narcan is a safe and effective community-based approach to controlling the opioid overdose epidemic. It is expected that through implementation of the IMPACT100: How to Save a Life program that the number of opioid deaths will be reduced substantially. The project goals include recognition of opioid overdose and prevention of death, creation of opportunities to connect people with drug recovery and health care, and raising awareness among community partners for the purpose of saving lives. The grant will provide volunteer recruitment and community resources to ensure sustainability of this program through Health and Hope Clinic. The Clinic will track data to determine measurable impact beyond life-saving measures, including socioeconomic status, employment status, those obtaining opioids via legal prescription, and overdose incidents resulting in emergency department visits. Ultimately, this data can be shared freely with other nonprofit clinics around Florida to allow them to execute a similar program. The impact of this grant will exist far beyond the county borders.
