Grant Year: 2017 | Focus Area: Environment, Recreation & Preservation | Grant Amount: $107,700 | Grant Status: Completed
Committed to improving the lives of companion animals in our community through advocacy, adoption, education and sanctuary, Humane Society of Pensacola Inc. (HSOP) was founded in 1943 by concerned citizens to provide shelter to area cats and dogs in need. In 1980, Escambia County Animal Services was built and contracted to provide the county and city's animal services, leaving HSOP to re-brand as a limited admission, No-Kill shelter. Today HSOP stands as a no-kill adoption center for homeless dogs and cats and a leader in the cause for spay and neuter. The organization is commonly known as Pensacola Humane Society (PHS) and provides assistance and shelter to over 1,100 homeless animals (dogs and cats) per year by providing low-cost spay and neuter services to the public and rescue groups at a rate of over 6,000 surgeries per year. The organization seeks to help the greater Pensacola area become a No-Kill community. Current programs include a Pet Foster Program caring for approximately 400 dogs and cats per year, Pet Food Pantry for families who temporarily cannot feed their pet, low cost spay & neuter clinic and a Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program for feral cats.
In recognition of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Pensacola Humane Society, the organization seeks funding to end the euthanasia of shelter pets via The Humane Express. In 2015, over 9,000 dogs and cats were killed in our two county shelters. Through the purchase of one multi-purpose vehicle, PHS can help end space-based euthanasia at the county shelters. IMPACT 100 funds would be added to other fundraising amounts to purchase a Ford E450 truck. This 26 foot mobile adoption unit would be modified to include 28 crates, two air conditioners, a generator, desk space, automatic awning, solar panels to support a second battery, two outside viewing panels, and an on-board water system. Additional fundraising events have been added this year to ensure the additional $28,110 needed to secure the vehicle is available at the time of delivery. The life expectancy of the truck is 10 years and PHS expects to utilize the vehicle for a long period of time by maintaining a strict adherence to the maintenance schedule for the vehicle and its modifications.
PHS is committed to establishing the Greater Pensacola region as a No-Kill Community by 2023. The foundation was laid with the creation of the Spay & Neuter Clinic to address pet over-population. The Human Express mobile adoption vehicle will enable PHS to take another important step in achieving their goal by expanding the number of adoptions performed by PHS. With the addition of this vehicle, PHS will be able to transport more animals to offsite adoption events and significantly propel the effort to conduct more adoptions, transfer more animals from county shelters and perform more spay and neuter surgeries. It will also support efforts by other departments within the organization by improving the ability to quickly transport large numbers of animals as part of the intake process. The Humane Express will significantly increase exposure and outreach opportunities such as adoption events where multiple pets would be transported, displayed, and available to the public in locations other than PHS’s main facility. It also improves the organization’s ability to expand the community education program targeted at schools and community groups. The vehicle would also play a major role in serving as a visible reminder of the needs of homeless pets in the community. The community will become more aware of the plight of homeless dogs and cats, and as a result of this project, more of these animals will find their forever home. As an added benefit, Pensacola Humane Society will be able to transport shelter dogs and cats in the event of a natural disaster.
