With an enrollment of over 2,400 students, Navarre High School (“NHS”) is the largest and newest high school in Santa Rosa County and the most ethnically diverse. The Navarre Raider Band Parent Association (the “Association”) has been a steadfast supporter of the Navarre High School Raider Band since its inception in 2017. The mission of the organization is to provide strong support to the student musicians, parents, staff and directors of the Navarre High School Band program through volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and event organization, fostering a community spirit that empowers growth and extends the outreach of music education. Over the years, the band has consistently achieved top ratings at all Florida Bandmaster Association (FBA) Music Performance Assessments (MPA). Their performances have graced stages at local, regional, and interstate events across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas. Band members actively engage in regional honor organizations, showcasing their talent annually in the prestigious FBA All-State Band since 2003. Many students have also earned placements in esteemed area and regional collegiate honor bands.

 

OVERVIEW OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT

Participation in the band fosters discipline, teamwork, and creativity, contributing to the overall personal and academic development of students. The aging wind instruments currently in use are becoming a significant barrier to maintaining the quality and accessibility of the program. IMPACT 100 grant funds will be used to purchase 10 new instruments and to offer music education workshops led by experienced instructors and guest musicians. Replacing the band’s significantly aged instruments, some over 10 years old, ensures students have access to high-quality equipment, enabling them to fully develop their musical talents without forcing the school to face the difficult decision of raising annual fees to cover costs. Such an increase in fees would inevitably limit opportunity for many students and negatively affect the personal and academic development of students. To ensure sustainability, the Association has a comprehensive plan with reliable funding strategies, including annual BBQ fundraisers and managing concession stands. The Association’s partnership with Schmidt’s Music guarantees regular maintenance, ensuring the instruments’ longevity.

EXPECTED IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

Within NHS’s student population, 30.1% are classified as economically disadvantaged. This grant will play a crucial role in replacing some of the school band’s aging instruments so students may continue to thrive without imposing additional financial burdens on families. This is crucial for ensuring all students, regardless of their economic situation, have the opportunity to participate in the band and benefit from the many advantages of music education. Importantly, the grant prepares students for future opportunities in the arts, nurturing the students’ musical education with many band members likely to participate in local college music programs and cultural organizations. The grant will enable the organization to ensure a continuous pipeline of talent sustaining cultural vitality and allow the band to reach a wider audience through increased community performances and events, enriching the cultural experience for residents and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.
