Building Homes, Communities, and Hope, One Family at a Time: Tools for Construction Site
Grant Year: 2019 | Focus Area: Family | Grant Amount: $106,000 | Grant Status: Completed
The mission of Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, Inc. (Habitat) is to seek to put God's love into action, by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Since its inception in 1982, more than 1,300 families have purchased a home through their program. Habitat builds high-quality, energy-efficient homes and sells them to eligible families at cost with a 0% APR mortgage. All of the organization’s resources are devoted to ensuring each accepted family will live in a home; there is no waiting list. Over 2,500 volunteers come together to assist in building these homes. New technology that brought their application online was initiated. That has increased access for individuals who may not have the means to be transported to their home offices. Habitat offers homeowner classes and a Neighborhood Revitalization program, which improves the community through beautification projects and establishing neighborhood associations. The organization builds 30-40 homes a year, and the Pensacola Habitat for Humanity is in the top 10% of producers of the 300 Habitat for Humanity organizations across the US. Their volunteer base here builds homes 5 days a week, every week, providing home ownership for first time home buyers.
IMPACT 100 funds will be used to purchase tools and safety equipment for Habitat’s construction department. Three types of home construction tools will be purchased: electric tools (e.g. circular saw, framing nailer, trim nailer); hand tools and safety equipment (e.g. hammer, pliers, hard hats, screwdrivers, safety glasses); and large equipment, (forklift, skid steer, mulcher). New tools and equipment will enable Habitat to continue to offer premier service and access to affordable homeownership. Many of the tools in the warehouse are older, having gone through hundreds of home builds. All tools have lifespans, and older tools affect efficiency at the worksite. New tools are more efficient and safer for construction crews. They are ergonomically designed to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders. With the new tools, Habitat will be able to outfit a third tool truck allowing for three construction projects to go on at the same time. The current stock of tools and equipment, though complete, has not been replaced for some time. In order to complete the number of jobs that are anticipated, Habitat has identified a great need for new tools and equipment.
Habitat is the leader in affordable housing development and advocacy in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. There is a well-defined need within Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. The projections for applications over the next year have almost doubled. The expected impact of the project is the continued building of high-quality, energy-efficient, homes that are affordable for families in the Greater Pensacola Bay Area. The goal is to serve those living within the 30% to 80% Area Median Income (AMI) range by assisting them in realizing the dream of home ownership. Habitat’s online access program resulted in more applications in four months than are normally received in two years. This is a reflection of the need for Habitat’s services in a community where prices of homes and rents for apartments are skyrocketing, and income is not catching up. The investment in new tools and equipment will increase efficiency at the worksites and decrease potential overhead costs. In doing so, Habitat is further placing families as the highest priority in their mission to deliver quality service and safe homes and the Habitat vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live comes closer to reality.
