17 Oct Pensacola High School Band Boosters Association, Inc
Music is for Everyone
Grant Year: 2018 | Focus Area: Arts & Culture | Grant Amount: $100,300 | Grant Status: Completed
The Pensacola High School (PHS) Band Boosters Association (the Boosters) was founded in 1978 with a mission to provide financial and volunteer support to the Bands of Pensacola High School. Membership is comprised of parents of current band students at PHS. The Boosters support PHS, Pensacola's oldest and only inner-city high school. Since 1980, PHS has been the high school center for the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and hosted students from nearly every continent. Additionally the International Baccalaureate (IB) program has graduated over 2,000 students since the program began in 1986. Over the last five years, the Boosters have become much more active, increasing membership and financial support to the band program at PHS. Current programs of the Boosters include a new uniform fund drive, the funds of which will be matched by the Escambia County School District, creation of a corporate sponsorship program, construction of new drum major platforms, construction of organization equipment to move the band instruments and various fundraising events.
IMPACT 100 grant funds will be used to purchase a variety of instruments (56 wind instruments and 9 piano labs) along with common accessories to start a beginning band curriculum at PHS and facilitate the continuation of band participation for incoming band students who do not have financial access to purchasing or renting instruments. From the review of the student demographics, non-IB students comprise 69% of the student body, but only 42% of the band students. The target population for this grant includes those underserved traditional students (non-IB) at PHS, the majority of whom are minorities who did not have access to instruments in middle school and have never learned to play an instrument, as well as students who were able to use school instruments in middle school but cannot continue without access to free instruments. All instruments purchased with IMPACT 100 funds will last twenty years or more and become the property of PHS as part of the Escambia County School District, so the instruments will help facilitate PHS Bands for many years to come.
Although the PHS band is seeing continued increases in enrollment, this is mainly due to the increase of participation from the International Baccalaureate students. Affording young, traditional high school students the opportunity to learn and express themselves through music, whether as a beginner or continuing student will foster a love and certainly an appreciation of the arts. These students will be able to enjoy the many arts and cultural events that take place within the Pensacola Bay Area with a new appreciation, since they will know the hard work it takes to produce the artistic work. The Boosters expect the impact of offering a beginning band class and facilitating the continuation of band education on the high school band students to be greater selfconfidence, self-respect, and self-esteem; improved test scores; increased personal discipline; and overall pride within the school as a whole. The implementation of this program will result in a more positive perception of Pensacola High School and its students, a new generation of teenagers and young adults who will have an appreciation for the arts and who will now be able participate as artists and audience members in community artistic events, as well as music students for University of West Florida and Pensacola State College music programs.
