Veteran Family Homelessness Prevention

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Palm Beach County, Florida, Wounded Veterans Relief Fund (WVRF) was created in response to the growing number of Florida veterans returning from post-9/11 combat with severe injuries, financial hardships, and limited access to resources during their transition to civilian life. WVRF's mission is to provide urgent financial assistance and critical dental care for eligible wounded and service-disabled Florida veterans. WVRF works closely with VA social workers, County Veteran Service Officers, and community partners to identify veterans in crisis and respond quickly to their needs. Throughout its history, WVRF has maintained a strong focus on accountability, transparency, and measurable impact. The organization consistently allocates over 80% of its revenue directly toward program services, ensuring donor dollars go where they are needed most. As of mid-2025, WVRF has provided over $1.3 million in support to veterans and their families for dental care and homelessness prevention services alone. As Florida is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the nation—over 1.5 million veterans—WVRF's role continues to expand. 

OVERVIEW OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT

Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties are home to over 53,000 veterans, many of whom face challenges related to housing stability, unemployment, mental health, and reintegration into civilian life. The primary goal of this project is to prevent veteran homelessness and provide stable housing support for veterans and their families in the Pensacola area. Through timely financial assistance and coordinated support services, WVRF aims to help veterans avoid the trauma of homelessness by maintaining or securing safe, permanent housing. Specifically, WVRF aims to: prevent homelessness for at-risk veterans by providing emergency funds for rent, utilities, and housing-related expenses; stabilize housing for veterans and their families during crisis; support long-term self-sufficiency by connecting veterans with case management, employment services, and community resources; and reduce the number of veterans entering the shelter system or living in unstable or unsafe conditions. IMPACT 100 funds will be used for rental assistance to prevent eviction or secure emergency housing, utility assistance to restore or maintain service, temporary lodging expenses, and partial salary for a case worker. By prioritizing prevention, WVRF helps ensure that those who served the country are not left behind. 

EXPECTED IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

Through this project, Wounded Veterans Relief Fund will provide targeted activities and services designed to prevent homelessness and ensure housing stability for veterans and their families in the Greater Pensacola area. Key actions include: direct payments to landlords, utility companies, or housing agencies to cover rent, past-due bills, security deposits, or move-in costs to avoid eviction or homelessness for Veterans; dedicated case manager assessments, a housing stability plan and support services coordination; assistance locating affordable housing and managing housing applications, especially for those transitioning from temporary or unstable living conditions; referrals for employment services, VA benefits, mental health support, legal aid, and community programs to address the underlying causes of housing insecurity; and continued communication with veterans and landlords to ensure housing is maintained and that long-term support is in place when needed to better support Veterans.
